The Third Annual Mokihana Club Women’s Golf Scramble was a great time for golfers and served a great purpose, too.
The recent event, held at the lovely Mokihana Golf Course at the Kaua‘i Lagoons, was picture perfect with blue skies and light winds.
And with a beautiful day and tasty lunch, the golfers got to help some of Kaua‘i’s unsung heroes — nurses — as all profits from the of the scramble exclusively support The Mokihana Club’s Nursing Scholarship Fund.
This year, the Mokihana Club awarded nine nursing scholarships to students at Kaua’i Community College.
With the shortage of nurses becoming critical here on Kaua’i, funds raised to support their education are very important.
With an 8 a.m. shotgun start, 92 women were off in their golf carts, beaming with the possibility of being the winning team.
But the day started an hour earlier with a little help.
At 7 a.m., competitors began purchasing Mulligans and “Closest to the Pin”, which were quickly snapped up to get an upper hand and help Kaua‘i’s nursing students.
Volunteers also gave out goody bags and water to all entrants, while other volunteers arranged the many prizes in the Terrace Restaurant where lunch was to be served.
After a wonderful round, the exuberant golfers joined the volunteers and many Mokihana Club members for a delicious buffet luncheon.
They were joined at the tables by three of the scholarship recipients: Ruth Dibble, Chelsea Dinnan and Lynne Pettigrew.
The golfers didn’t go away empty-handed though: every golfer received a prize at the drawing during lunch, donated by the generous business and professional community of Kaua’i.
Then, moment of truth arrived and the winning team was announced.
With a tie for first place, Mokihana Chair Mary June Purvis and Lil Riley awarded generous gifts to the team of Maricel Drame, Connie Nagata, Shandra Elsing and Frances Gragasin, sponsored by Pioneer High-Bred International, Inc., and the team of Kemamo Hookano, Debbi Leyva, Pearl Ferguson and Kathi Masters.
The Mokihana Club said they extend a mahalo to everyone in the community and members who helped to make the day a success.
