Uncomprising uniforms unfair?
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
In sports, what’s the real reason for uniforms?
Well, my answer would be that it serves as a way to distinguish one team from another. In addition, it gives a squad unity, and yet possibly another reason, but not as important, is that it serves as a fashion statement.
From the days of short shorts and extremely tight outfits, to the baggy and revealing uniforms we have today, we’ve all come a long way.
But speaking of today, it was brought to my attention recently that a photograph on the sports page offended an individual enough to submit a complaint to the district office!
Why? Well, I found out that the photo, which was of a girls’ player, displayed too much skin, or too much midriff to be exact.
I talked to a coach about this matter, who is a female and she was just as amazed at how this all came about. To me, we have too many individuals with too much time on their hands and with that extra time, they complain about things not worth complaining about.
If that individual looked at the whole picture and realized that the uniform was the same as every girl on the squad and if that individual knew that uniforms do get out of place at times because of the action taking place, then that person would realize that there was no reason for being upset.
I mean, why didn’t anyone back then complain about those tight, short shorts that the basketball players were wearing, or even the tight outfits by the girls’ players as well?
Times are changing, in fact, they’ve already changed and common sense tells me that the complaint was from an individual not used to change.
Also, another photograph just a week before portrayed a boys’ player with his shirt up, displaying his belly area.
Did anyone throw a complaint down the complaint avenue? Hmm..let me think for a second…no!
In addition, the actual game should override the type of uniform a player is wearing. If it matches the rest of his/her squad and doesn’t fall off or suffocate the player, then I deem that, the proper attire.
When I suited up for basketball games at a young age, the shorts and jerseys were smaller and tighter.
As I got older, the outfits got bigger and were as baggy as a grandma’s mu‘umu‘u (hawaiian dress). When they were smaller, no one complained, because it was a sign of the times. It was “ok” at that point, but why isn’t it “ok” now?
Your guess is as good as mine!
Red Raider girls dominate in KIF meet
There’s some good news and some bad news!
The unofficial results are out for the KIF track and field championship, but the official results won’t be out until around 9 p.m. tonight.
According to Kaua‘i coach Richard Matsumoto, a few protests were filed but it won’t challenge the overall results, which has the Kaua‘i girls and Waimea boys winning the titles.
The Red Raider girls won every single track and field event and absolutely dominated the events at Vidinha Stadium on Friday. There was a total of 16 events and the Kaua‘i women won 15 of them.
The only event that evaded the Red Raiders was the pole vault, which isn’t contested here on Kaua‘i, according to Matsumoto.
As soon as the official results come in, The Garden Island will publish the entire tally of events.
