A gentleman from Illinois said it best, “Post-cards aren’t this good!” He was referring to the weather, the sea condition, and the warm spirit of aloha during this year’s 2005 Po‘ipu Challenge Outrigger Canoe race.
With a deep water start for the women’s and mixed crews off Brennecke’s Beach at nine am sharp, the 2005 Po‘ipu Challenge was under way.
The men’s crews departed at 11 a.m. Blue skies, calm sea, and the standard Hawaiian balmy tradewind was the perfect backdrop, as the green flag flew, and the appropriately named Po‘ipu Challenge began. Several hundred local cheerleaders and island rooters clapped and yelled for their favorite teams and boats.
This annual event was sponsored by several local businesses including Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Steinlager Beer, Cold Stone Creamery, Red Bull, Kaua‘i Springs Water, Keoki’s Paradise, Da-Life/Kaua‘i ATV Tours, Nukomoi, Surf Co., and Treasures In Thread,
Hosted by one of Kaua‘i’s oldest ocean racing organizations, Koloa Outrigger Canoe Club, (KOCC) this year’s Po‘ipu Challenge dramatized a part of Hawai‘i’s ancient past, and demonstrates Hawai‘i’s official state sport—Outrigger Canoe Racing.
Celebrating its 25th season, Koloa Outrigger Canoe Club is proud to represent Kauai’s south shore community.
Behind signature dark shades, Coach Sa’le Potts has directed the Koloa club since 1980, first from Po‘ipu Beach, and now in the waters off Koloa landing. Results of the contest can be found in the scoreboard on page B2.
