Two former KIF athletes scarfed up two different honors, as the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo held its annual sports banquet at the UHH Campus Center.
Kaua‘i High School multi-sport star Tiana Lum-Tucker and Kapa‘a High School baseball standout Sean Tamura picked up awards for their efforts this past season.
Lum-Tucker, a volleyball, cross-country, and track and field all-star for the Red Raiders was voted as the “Most Dedicated” athlete on her tennis squad.
What really made the honor special was the fact that the votes were from their peers.
Former Warrior infielder and KIF top performer, Tamura scored high honors as one of five UH-Hilo athletes to take home the “Unsung Hero” award.
The senior was one of the top hitters and fielders on the Vulcan baseball squad, despite their not-so-good record.
Matsuyoshi tabs all-conference honors
Coming off of outstanding performances at the 2005 Pacific West Conference Golf Championship, seven University of Hawai‘i at Hilo players, including Kaua‘i’s Ki‘ilani Matsuyoshi, have earned all-conference recognition.
The UH-Hilo freshman capped off an outstanding firstyear with a runner-up finish at the 2005 Pac-West Conference Golf Championship and brought home first-team conference honors.
Also, former Kapa‘a High School athlete Sharlene Carillo nailed down top scholar-athlete honors for cross-country. To qualify, each student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.0 GPA and lettered during the 2004-05 season.
