WAILUA – Bret Netzer and Cory French shared the honor of leading the Kaua‘i High School boys team to the KIF Golf Championships, Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Netzer, who held a one-stroke lead over French at the crossing, finished the day at two-over-par 74 with consistent team leader French as the Red Raider boys clinched the championship with a 299.
Sean Ogawa of Kula School snared Top Individualist honors with a three-under-par 69.
Meanwhile, the battle between Kapa‘a’s No. 1 and 2 players, Jet Levinthol and Travis Toguchi waged within the battle for second place.
Levinthol crossed with a two-under-par 34, but could not hold the margin in the back nine as Toguchi, crossing three strokes back of Levinthol, finished the back nine one-under-par to fall short of the Warrior’s top player by a stroke, 71-72. However, despite this strong competition for the Warrior lead, Kapa‘a was again relegated to third place by the Menehune who finished two strokes better than Kapa‘a, 327 against Kapa‘a’s 329.
The Red Raiders’ victorious team effort was fueled by Kellen Watabu (37-38-74) and Chad Nonaka (39-37-76) in addition to Netzer and French.
Waimea’s effort was led by Grant Kagawa’s 77 (37-40), Noel Torres (41-38-79), Tom Hashimoto (41-44-85), and Ryan Guzman (45-41-86) with Markland Soliva taking individualist honors with a 74.
Miki Ueoka paced the Kaua‘i High School girls team who also clinched the KIF championship with a 229, Ueoka pacing the field with a 73 (36-37). Mary Akutagawa and Shelcie Takenouchi each finished with 78 to help clinch the title.
