Former Kaua‘i High School standout Ki‘ilani Matsuyoshi fired a 10-over, 231, which was good enough for third-place in the 2005 Pacific West Conference Golf Championship.
University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s Nick Mason and Western New Mexico University’s Katharine Dorris claimed medalist honors at the 2005 Pacific West Conference Golf Championship at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course as they led their respective schools to the team championships.
Mason turned in a 10-under-par, 203 to beat teammate Garrett Okamura by three strokes.
After carding a one-under 70 on the first day, Mason took control of the tournament in the second round by coming up with birdies on five of the last eight holes. He checked in with a six-under, 65 on day two. On the final day, he turned in six birdies but marked three bogeys for a 68.
Okamura also started a one-under 70. He came back with a five-birdie, one-bogey round on Friday for a 4-under 67. He turned in a final 69 with three birdies and a bogey in the round to finish the tournament at 7-under, 206.
Finishing in third place was Montana State University-Billings Chris McConnell at 209 (71-69-69). Tied at fourth were Western New Mexico University’s Jason Myers and UHH’s Colin Gilliam at 214. UHH’s Kevin Shimomura was sixth with a 216. Troy Higashiyama completed the Vulcans squad with a 223 (76-75-72) for a tie in 14th place.
UHH built upon its 17-stroke, first-round lead take the team title by 30 strokes. The Vulcans turned in rounds of 277, 276 and 282 for an 835. MSU-Billings followed at 865.
Completing the field were Western New Mexico (866), Hawaii Pacific University (886), Brigham Young University-Hawaii (943) and Chaminade University (1144).
Dorris led the women’s tournament from the beginning with an opening round of 73.
WNMU’s Rhiannon Costello finished in fourth place with a 242 (87-78-78). UHH’s Mineko Kanamoto and Kristen Higa were the next two low scores with Kanamoto turning in a 243 (87-78-78) and Higa, a 246 (82-79-85). UHH’s Breena Kadekaru finished 11th with a 260 (88-83-89).
