Although Kaua‘i managed to flop during the first round of play in KIF girls’ hoops, the second round has proved to be a bit nicer to the ladies in red, with their win against Kapa‘a.
But the first round champion Menehune squad controls their own destiny and if they pull out a win against Kaua‘i tonight, they will pull ahead and move a game up on both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a.
Menehune head coach Elton Montemayor and Red Raider head coach Dennis Aquino face the same dilemma.
They both have young squads with a sprinkle of experience. For Waimea, they rely heavily on the services of seniors Mallorie Hepa and Jessica Jacinto, along with junior forward Joanna Jacinto, and sophomore Moani Durant.
However, if the Menehune plan to nail down the KIF title, a freshman will be the key.
Point guard Josey Jacinto has played like a senior so far this season and Montemayor mentioned her many talents even before the start of the season.
“She’s got all the tools; she can dribble, shoot, and pass; plus she doesn’t get flustered,” Montemayor said.
Against the Kaua‘i full-court zone press, Jacinto will be counted on to make the right decisions and handle the ball effectively.
The bread and butter for the Red Raiders is their speed and quickness. Led by senior Ulu Kelekoma, who leads the league in steals, juniors Rachel Taira and Darcie Allianic, and senior Sherri Gebauer, the Red Raiders are lethal with their pressure defense.
According to Aquino, his team has to also execute on offense to stand a chance against the Menehune.
“Since we have a young squad this year, it takes a little while for them to absorb what we’re trying to do, and I think at this point they’re getting it,” Aquino said.
The key for Kaua‘i is its three-point ace, Ho‘onani Dennis. The sophomore has found her touch and if her shots fall, the Red Raiders can institute their full-court press.
