LIHU‘E – Kaua‘i bowlers Darryl Izumo and Olin Kaulili made the cut as twelve bowlers from the starting field of 37 bowlers advanced to the championship series at the PBA Wild Turkey Bourbon Rice Shopping Center Open that kicked off Monday.
Izumo, also the proprietor of Lihu‘e Bowling Center where the action is taking place, topped the list of finishers, Monday afternoon following eight rounds of qualifying games.
Izumo finished with 1823 pins for a 227.87 average to lead the dozen qualifiers heading into the championship rounds, Tuesday morning.
Kaulili, from Koloa, finished Monday’s rounds ninth over-all with a 1629 pincount and a 203.62 average.
The WTB Rice Shopping Center Open defending champion David Leverage of Peoria, Arizona finished Monday’s rounds sixth overall with a 1668 pincount and a 208.50 average.
Crowd pleaser Tony Reyes of San Bruno, California, made it to the championship rounds at the 2004 PBA event here, but did not advance, Monday, Reyes finishing at 1501 and a 187.62 average.
Other Kaua‘i bowlers who were involved in the Monday rounds included Sheldon Peralta of Lawai (1560), Michael Sukehira of Kapa‘a (1487), Junicio Cacal of Anahola (1471), Russell Shimazu of Lihu‘e (1468), ron Viquelia of Lihu‘e (1240), Aaron Medina of Lihu‘e (1210), and Kyrin Sasaki of Lihu‘e (1168), who at 19 years old, was the youngest bowler on the floor, Monday.
A practice round for off-island bowlers as well as the Pro Am event was held starting Sunday afternoon.
Action gets underway this morning starting at 8:30 a.m.
