Although the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders are 6-0 so far this season, Kapa‘a and Waimea still have a shot at the title in the second round of KIF baseball, which starts today with a doubleheader between Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a at the Ron Martin Field, starting at 10 a.m.
However, if the Menehune (3-3) and Warriors (0-6) plan to get back into the race, they’ll have to strike early and often, because the Red Raiders are as hot as a summer’s day in Kekaha.
The Menehune, who have been the tougest challenge to the Red Raiders so far this season, open up their second round against Kaua‘i at Vidinha Stadium on Wednesday, April 20, starting at 2:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Warriors are still looking for that elusive first victory of the season, but it won’t be easy, as both Kaua‘i and Waimea have been able to have their ways against Kapa‘a.
The two-time defending KIF champions need to run the table and finish the season undefeated if they are to receive any consideration for a seed and that all important first round bye at this year’s state baseball tournament at the Les Murakami Stadium on O‘ahu.
So a loss could hurt Kaua‘i and its chances at the next level and that’s why head coach Hank Ibia Jr. is telling his team to not let up against their foes.
The KIF’s youthful appearance this season is actually a good thing for the baseball scene.
Looking over to the next few years, the players will be heavily experienced when it comes down to their junior and senior years.
Nonetheless, the second round of KIF baseball should be all Kaua‘i, unless Waimea and Kapa‘a can make dramatic changes, which is a definite possibility.
KIF baseball starts up its second round today at the Ron Martin Field, as Kapa‘a hosts the Red Raiders in doubleheader action starting at 10 a.m.
