For the first time in history, there’s more than two all-state soccer players from Kaua‘i.
According to The Honolulu Advertiser, Waimea’s brother combination of Kenny and Justin Estes, along with Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson, were selected to the prestigious team.
In addition, the Menehune also placed more players than any other school in the state on the elite first-team.
Kenny, one of the fastest boys on the island, was chosen for his defensive capabilities. The junior played a critical part in Waimea’s thirdplace finish at the state level, the highest ever for a KIF team.
His older brother Justin, a solid goalie, acted as a human backboard with his terrific athletic skills between the goal posts.
Thompson, nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” because of his ability to slide into defenses and attack without notice, was chosen as a forward.
The KIF player of the year netted five goals during the season and four more in the state tournament. Thompson was the key to the toppling of the defending champion Mililani Trojans, who won over 60 games, before the Menehune matchup in this past year’s state tournament.
Fellow Menehune Kollin Morikawa made the honorable mention squad as a defender.
Meanwhile, Waimea senior defender Luke Tsuchiya was the lone KIF player on the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s first-team all-state squad.
While Thompson exploded on the offensive end, Tsuchiya made the difference on the defensive side. Thompson grabbed second team all-state honors as a forward.
Earning honorable mention all-state honors were Kapa‘a’s Masai Bell and Micah Ohlen, Kaua‘i’s Dan Riggle and Micah Young, and Waimea’s Jeffrey Kakuda, Scott Martin, and Justin Estes.
