Those planning on hiking Na Pali will have to hike a bit farther than usual this week and next, as shoulder improvements will close a portion of Kuhio Highway leading to Ha‘ena State Park to vehicular traffic today through Friday.
Access will still be allowed on foot, and access by vehicles will be allowed during hours when crews aren’t working on repaving the parking lot at the end of the highway, or the shoulders on either side of the highway, said David Hedstrom of Global Specialty Contractor.
Additional work is planned for next week as well, when again vehicular traffic won’t be allowed into the state park, he said. That work schedule has not yet been finalized.
There are ample places to park, at the county’s Ha‘ena Beach Park, and along the road shoulders once the new pavement cools, or out of the construction zone, he said.
Potholes along the route will be filled as well. The roadway to be repaired is the portion between the county’s Ha‘ena Beach Park and the end of the road at Ke‘e Beach, a length of between a half mile and a mile, Hedstrom estimated.
The length of time the total project takes will depend in part on weather conditions, he said. The county’s Ha‘ena Beach Park is the recommended parking area while the work continues, he said. A flag person will be directing people in vehicles on where they may and may not park, he explained. Work will be done during daylight hours, from around 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
