NEWS & NOTES
Pleased to meet me
- I’m Andy Gross, and I am the new business editor for The Garden Island. I come to Kaua‘i from a number of places, most lately Maui. Previous to that, I worked as a reporter and columnist in the Caribbean, with previous journalistic stops in Boston, the Carolinas, and Florida. I have covered hurricanes, politics in Haiti, tourism, sports, city government and, once, a man in New Bern, N.C. who swore he saw an image of Jesus Christ in a watermelon.
So far, I have not been voted off of any island. I am excited to be part of The Garden Island staff and the Kaua‘i community. I’m eager to learn things about the island, and to become a better reporter and listener. I am originally from New York City. Since I am covering business, there is a bridge I’d like to sell you.
I have found a reporter is only as good as his or her last story. Journalism is a daily challenge, and business is an important beat, with a lot of story possibilities that impact many facets of the community. If you have any information, news tips, story ideas or bagels you’d like to share with me, please don’t hesitate. My cubicle is always open.

Singleton picks up Pele for brochure design
- You could say winning an honor named after Pele, the mythic goddess of fire, means you’re hot. And when it comes to picking up an advertising award against some tough competition, Kaua‘i’s Keith “Corky” Singleton is just that, at least in the creative sense of the word. Singleton, vice president of marketing for the still-under-construction Waipouli Beach Resort, picked up a first-place Pele award earlier this month in Honolulu, from leaders with the Hawaii Advertising Federation (HAF), for his design of a brochure for the resort across from Kaua‘i Village shopping center.
“We beat out some of Hawai‘i’s largest advertising firms for this award,” Singleton said in a press release. “My staff and I are very proud we could bring this award home to Kaua‘i.”
“What he did, to get the message across, selling the image of a resort not yet built, is amazing,” said Matt Heim, president of HAF, referring to the $170-million resort. Heim said the award judges were from the Mainland. Heim described the evening as a kind of black-tie, gala, Oscar-type affair. Singleton, as a representative of District 13 of the American Advertising Federation, will move on to a national competition that will be held later this year in Nashville.
