Kaua‘i County officials want to hand out grants of up to $2,500 to island nonprofit organizations working on projects aimed at strengthening communities and promoting a drug-free environment.
County officials said such groups may be eligible for the grants from the Kaua‘i County Community Fund, which is administered by the county’s anti-drug coordinator, Roy Nishida.
The grant funds have been made available by the office of Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona, Nishida said. The new project is part of Mayor Bryan Baptiste’s four-phase, five-year plan to reduce drug use on Kaua‘i.
Applications for the state grants can be picked up at Nishida’s office at the Lihu‘e Civic Center between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
For organizations to receive a grant, the request can’t be for more than $2,500, goals must be identified and the applications must be completely filled out and signed by two organization representatives, officials said.
The proposals are anticipated to be reviewed before May 1, with notification of awards to be given shortly thereafter, county officials aid. The deadline for filing is Friday, April 22.
