Break out the lumber, sunflower seeds!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
I was just watching a special on the Boston Red Sox’s amazing World Series run yesterday morning and I totally forgot about the whole steriod scandal that’s sweeping the nation, even the Red Sox Nation.
However, I refused to let steriods take over this season and instead, we have to look ahead and let our past time do the talking, even if it remains forever tainted with the substance that brought it down.
Boston captured the nation’s attention and not only sports fans around the country felt as if the little guy finally won and ousted goliath (The Yankees) from their perch high atop the Empire State Building.
Whatever happens this season on the diamond though, we will always look back to last season’s great run by the ‘Sox. Whether you liked the Red Sox or not, you just felt a certain connection with the bunch of idiots from New England.
They had that everyday workmanlike attitude about them, that made the average joe of America, feel at home with his/her job.
On an island where sports is king, whether it may be local or national, we love to talk about sports from Kekaha to Hanalei.
Baseball, rodeo, basketball, football, surfing, polo, and hockey seem to be the talk of most conversations during the after work hours.
Not Tar Heel Blue again!
If you bleed powdered blue, then you’re a happy man or woman, but give me a break! I can’t see the rich getting richer, even if first-time North Carolina coach Roy Williams got his first taste of a national title in his illustrious coaching career.
Monday’s NCAA championship win against Illinois was just another reason to hate team’s like the Patriots, Yankees, and the Lakers. The teams who win titles year in and year out, should let the little guy win it once in awhile.
But then again, what would sports be without the dominating programs like North Carolina, Duke, and Michigan State.
I think I’m just bitter because my bracket read Illinois over the Tar Heels, but it did turn out to be a great game, but not the way I wanted it to be.
Also, I was looking forward to telling people that my favorite team (Arizona Wildcats), lost to the national champions, which would be Illinois if they would’ve won against North Carolina.
On another note, how many of you remember Missy Cox? Well, she’s a fellow 1998 Kaua‘i High School graduate, who is also a big Arizona Wildcat fan.
Cox, who is on her to getting her PHD in civil engineering from Arizona is also disgruntled by the heart breaking loss by the ‘Cats against Illinois.
I actually forgot that she was still attending the University of Arizona and I hope she remembers that back in ‘97, the Cat’s won it all, which turned out to be our junior year in high school. Cox was a basketball manager back then I don’t know if she planned on going to Arizona back in her junior year, but all I know is that I’m not the only one rootin’ for the Wildcats, which makes the transition from sore loser to shared grief, a lot smoother one.
Purcell collapses during practice
HONOLULU — Hawai‘i defensive end Melila Purcell collapsed in practice Tuesday after suffering a concussion, school officials said.
The 6-foot-5, 258-pound Purcell collapsed during one-on-one drills and laid motionless for about 10 minutes before being taken to The Queen’s Medical Center where he was diagnosed with a concussion and released.
