LIHU‘E – Swimmers in the Mokihana Aquatics program were greeted with a surprise when they showed up for practice, Tuesday evening as Coach Orlando “O” Anaya proclaimed the session as a celebration for the accomplishments of one of their swimmers, Katelyn Umetsu.
Coach Anaya said that the Waimea High School senior has been with the program for a long time, and during her tenure in the KIF swimming has brought home numerous gold medals for the Menehune.
With just a few months remaining before Umetsu graduates from high school, Coach Anaya thought it would be a fitting tribute to the longtime swimmer as well as an opportunity for the younger swimmers to see what diligent practice can achieve.
“I’m the chief operating officer of Mokihana, so today, I’m declaring the first Katelyn Umetsu Day,” the coach told the swimmers who eagerly jumped into the waters of the Kaua‘i High School pool where they spent their practice time indulging in safe water play utilizing water polo balls while the honoree took advantage of the opportunity to chat with other swimmers.
