LIHU‘E — Several hundred members of the Kauai Buddhist Council gathered at the Kauai Veterans Center to celebrate the birth of the Buddha at the annual Hanamatsuri services yesterday.
Comprised of members at nine churches located island-wide, the Kauai Buddhist Council hosts the annual service where all members come together to celebrate the birth of the Buddha, who was born approximately 2,600 years ago in Lumbini Garden.
The Buddhist religion hosts many special, or holy, days throughout the year, with many of these celebrations commemorating the birthdays of Bodhisattvas or other significant dates in the Buddhist calendar. Buddhist churches participating in the celebration included the Kapaa Jodo Mission, the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission, the Kauai Tibetan Buddhist Dharma Center, the Lihue Hongwanji Mission, the Koloa Jodo Mission, the West Kauai Hongwanji — Koloa, Hanapepe, and Waimea temples, the Kauai Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji, Waimea Shingon Mission, and the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji Mission.
