With the KIF tennis season past its midpoint and on to its final five regular season matches, the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders came into the season as the favorites and are bruising through the year with no surprises with dominating performances week in and week out.
Both matches between Island/Waimea and Kapa‘a/Kula will be played at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts in sunny Po‘ipu, starting at 12 p.m., today.
In last week’s action, the matches between the Waimea and Kula boys were left out of The Garden Island because of a ruling, which hasn’t been cleared up by the KIF as of today.
Kula’s number one singles player was offisland playing in a tournament, so no first singles match took place. Waimea was also missing a player, but on the doubles side. So the Menehune number one singles player was placed on the first doubles squad, so the match could take place as scheduled.
In second singles action, Kula’s Alex Latif easily defeated Waimea’s Kollin Morikawa, 6-1, 6-1.
In first doubles, Waimea’s Joe Mecham and Bryan Hayashi upended Kula’s Dylan Latif and Sergei Wright, 6-3, 7-6.
Kula won by default in the second doubles match, but the Menehune came back to win the third doubles contest, as Jake Anderson and Scott Martin teamed up to oust Kula’s Darien Parrish and Matt Vinsko.
The final outcome was a 2-2 tie, but that’s if the first singles match doesn’t count for either team.
