Chrisman honored
LAIE, Hawai‘i – Brigham Young University Hawai‘i senior Jake Chrisman was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coacches (NABC), Thursday by being named to the NABC All-West Region Second Team.
This is the second year in a row Chrisman has been honored by the NABC, having been awarded First-Team West Region honors last season.
Chrisman, from Provo, Utah, led the Seasiders and was second in the conference in scoring with 21.0 points per game. He also averaged 5.3 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists, and shot 52.6 percent from the field for the season.
Chrisman was the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year last season and was also on the 2004 and 2005 All-Conference First Teams.
UH Warriors sweep Xavier
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai‘i men’s tennis team swept Xavier, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors won all three doubles and six singles matches to improve to 6-10 this season.
UH took the early lead after sweeping the doubles matches. The team of Dalibor Ptak and Derrick Lajola pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Rob Simpson and Justin Yeager at the top doubles court.
Junior Bryon Weinberg led the way for the Warriors in singles play, defeating Justin Yeager, 7-5,6-1, at the No. 2 court for his fourth consecutive victory. Junior Ryan Sceats won his 10th straight match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rob Simpson at No. 3.
In other action, senior Jarrod Diepraam pulled out a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) super-tiebreaker win over Brian Schubert at No. 4. Ptak, Chad Faulk and Lajola each won their matches in straight sets at the No. 1, 5, and 6 courts respectively.
The Rainbow Warriors return to competition with matches at San Diego, Apr. 8, and UC Irvine, Apr. 11.
Lions drop Rainbow Wahine
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai‘i women’s tennis team concluded its three-match spring break homestand with a 5-2 loss to Loyola, Marymount, Wednesday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Lions won all three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-12) rallied from a 1-0 deficit with a victory at the No. 1 court where Lauren Fitzgerald, the ITA’s No. 86th ranked player, had little trouble from Carla Arguelles, 6-1, 6-0, for her team-leading 15th singles win.
But, the Lions answered by taking the No. 2,3, and 6 courts, including former Kamehameha Schools graduate Kimi Kaloi’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Paige Mainor.
With LMU’s team victory in hand, the final two singles matches went to super-tiebreakers where UH’s Kimberly Curtis rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) triumph over Tamara Tanner at No. 4 for her fifth victory in her last six matches.
LMU’s Erin Ivey pulled out a dramatic 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Kana Aikawa at the No. 5 court.
The Rainbow Wahine again played without No. 2 singles player Sylvia Jaros who missed the team’s previous two matches due to a nagging wrist injury.
The Rainbow Wahine will travel to the mainland where it plays four matches in five days starting with Idaho State on Apr. 2.
Rainbow track heads to Stanford Invitational
The University of Hawai‘i women’s indoor track and field team returns to California to participate in the Nike Stanford Track and Field Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine will send five athletes to participate in the event. Dana Buchanan and Sabrina Reeve will run the 1500m while Kelly Young will compete in the 800m, hoping to improve on her NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 2:09.79.
Novelle Murray, already qualifying for the NCAA Regional, will compete in the discus, and Meghan Weaver will participate in the discus and the shot put.
