Overcoming disabilities, and winning
Life can throw some hard-breaking curve balls at you. How you swing at the bad pitches tells a lot about what you’re made of.
For polio survivor and Rotarian Robert “Motorcycle Bob” Mutchler, overcoming weak legs has turned into a global adventure.
Mutchler started on the Kaua‘i leg of a Hawai‘i tour this week aboard his specially-fitted BMW motorcycle mounted with a sidecar.
But “Motorcycle Bob” is doing a lot more than joining on fun runs with his powerful German motorcycle, for he is on a pilgrimage with an aim of wiping out polio.
Rotarians began their PolioPlus program in 1979, focusing on efforts to eradicate the once-common disease in its last strongholds, mostly in third-world nations.
Among those receiving help are six million children in the Philippines.
The motorcyclist is beginning his nationwide ride on Kaua‘i, with plans to move on to other islands in Hawai‘i before heading to the state capitols in the other 49 states, culminating his run at the Rotary Centennial Convention that starts on June 14 in Chicago.
Kaua‘i is fortunate in hosting “Motorcycle Bob.” It is hoped Kauaians will be inspired by his brave journey, made aware of the needs of others in nations less fortunate then ours, and remember this ride around Kaua‘i when life gets hard and hope is slipping away.
A good attitude and perseverance can pull one out of the rut on the road of life, even when the physical or financial problems seem too big to handle.
When life gets you down in “paradise,” remember “Motorcycle Bob,” and remember that you are fortunate to live on one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
