WAILUA – Kellen Watabu was chasing three strokes over teammate Cory French at the crossing during the KIF second week of golf played Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course under overcast skies and a chilly north wind.
French held a 34 at the crossing followed by Kula High School’s veteran Sean Ogawa who carded a 36 after nine holes.
Watabu held a 37 and finished the back nine in 36 for a 73 to take the top individual finish for Kaua‘i.
French topped all golfers with a three-under-par 69 to lead the Red Raider boys team to a 302 victory over Kapa‘a High School’s 335 and Waimea High School’s 337.
Kaua‘i boys team scoring members included French, Chad Nonaka (37-39-76), Bret Netzer (42-35-77), and Nikko Tacsiat (40-40-80).
Jet Levinthol continued to lead the Kapa‘a play, finishing at 79 (40-39) followed a stroke back by Travis Toguchi’s 80 (39-41) while Waimea was led by Noel Torres’ 76 (39-37).
Ogawa bested his brother Cyrus by four strokes in individual play.
On the girls’ competition, Kaua‘i High School’s Miki Ueoka was chasing three strokes over teammate Mary Akutagawa, but charged back to finishing with a 35 on the back nine to end at even par 73 to lead the girls’ scoring.
Kaua‘i girls finished their team competition with a 223 including scores from Ueoka, Akutagawa (35-39-74), and Shelcie Takenouchi (38-38-76).
