East Kaua‘i pulled off the win in a five inning time limit game against Kawaihau by scoring seven go ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kawaihau was first to score in the top of the first inning with seven runs off nine base hits from Gary Wardlow, Calvin Fujita, Ron Alfonso, Jack Lucas, Sherwood Iida, Robert Herrmann, Paul Awazu, Ken Tamashiro, and Frank Kohler. In the bottom of the first with Donald Boro and Jerome Hew on, Alex Youn hit a double scoring Boro, followed by Dickie Koerte scoring Hew.
Al Salvador was credited with the third run on a SF. In the second inning, Kawaihau scored five runs with East Kaua‘i scoring four runs. The score after two, was Kawaihau 12, East Kaua‘i 7. East Kaua‘i scored a single run in the third on a Kawaihau error, and after three, the score was Kawaihau 12, East Kaua‘i 8.
The fourth inning brought on a single Kawaihau run on a HR from Ron Alfonso. East Kaua‘i, however, drove in seven runs on eight hits from Night Owl, Ronnie Holt, Sam Fong, Boro, Hew, Youn, Koerte, Ramones and Les Kubo. East Kaua‘i for the first time went ahead of Kawaihau 12 to 15. With time running out, Kawaihau had a last chance at bat but managed to come up with only a single run. The game ended 13 Kawaihau, 15 East Kaua‘i.
Hitters for Kawaihau were: Iida, Awazu and Ken Tamashiro with 2 for 3, Wardlow with 2 for 4, Lucas and Herrmann with 3 for 3, Calvin Fujita and Alfonso with 3 for 4. Alfonso and Herrmann each had a HR with Herrmann credited with 4 RBI’s. Losing pitcher was Paul Gusman. Hitters for East Kaua‘i were: Boro with 2 for 2, Kubo with 2 for 3, Youn, Sam Fong, and Ramones with 3 for 3. Boro, Youn and Ramones all had a HR. Youn was also credited with four RBI’s. Winning pitcher was Norman Holt.
Lihu‘e A’s 9, East Kaua‘i 10
It was give and take for both teams, but East Kaua‘i overcame Lihu‘e in the bottom of the seventh. Lihu‘e and East Kaua‘i both scored three runs each in the first inning. In the second inning Lihu‘e came up with three runs on three East Kaua‘i errors and a base hit by Dwight Fujii.
In the bottom of the second inning East Kaua‘i scored two runs on hits from Ernest Koerte, Donald Koerte and Dickie Koerte. Lihu‘e was up one run with a score of 6 to 5.
In the fourth inning, both Lihu‘e and East Kaua‘i again scored one run each, keeping the game a tight match at 7 to 6 in favor of Lihu‘e. In the sixth inning Lihu‘e brought in two more runs on hits from Ismo Yoshishige, Fujii, Tomoo Hiranaka, and Braddah Rittmeister. East Kaua‘i was able to bring in a single run in the bottom of the sixth making the score Lihu‘e A’s 9, East Kaua‘i 7. Lihu‘e could not score in the top of the seventh but East Kaua‘i came up with the needed three runs on base hits from Boro, Jerome Hew and a HR from Ramones.
Hitters for Lihu‘e were: Rittmeister, Ernest Domingo and Russell Bardago with 2 for 4, Tomoo Hiranaka with 3 for 4, and Dwight Fujii with 4 for 5. Losing pitcher was Rittmeister. Hitters for East Kaua‘i were: Ernest Koerte with 2 for 3, Hew, Dickie Koerte, Ramones and Al Salvador with 2 for 4, and Boro with 3 for 4. Winning pitcher was Ronnie Holt.
Rookies 12, K-Makule 17
The Rookies came out swinging in the first inning and scored seven runs on seven base hits. With one away Hank Nishikawa drew a walk. Mike Folster then hit a triple and Nishikawa scored.
Stan Dela Cruz followed suit with a triple and Folster scored the second run. Archie Fontanilla got a single and Dela Cruz came in for run number three. Steven Lizama got on with a single and the Rookies had two runners on when Haru Maeda hit a triple and scored runs four and five.
Wayne Hashimoto got a single and slapped home run number six. Richard Vidinha drove in number seven with the fourth triple of the inning. K-Makule brought in three runs in the bottom of the first inning on hits from lefty Remata, Gordon Arakaki a triple from Guy Ruiz and a fielder’s choice to John Taboniar.
At the end of one the score was Rookies 7, K-Makule 3. The Rookies did not score in the second and third inning, but K-Makule brought in four runs on hits from Lefty Remata, Guy Ruiz, Taboniar, Danny Smith and Stan Buduan in the bottom of the third to tie the score. In the top of the fourth the Rookies went ahead by three runs when Wally Sonoda, Nishikawa and Folster scored.
K-Makule managed to come up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Lefty Remata hit a double bringing in Yuki Shigeta and Eddie Dela Cruz.
At the end of four, K-Makule was trailing 9 to 10. The Rookies did not score in the fifth inning but K-Makule came up with a big plus on six runs on base hits from Guy Ruiz, Smith, Doric Remata, Buduan, Dado Paiste, Jerry Albarado, and Herman Fraticelli. After five complete innings the score was Rookies 10, K-Makule 15.
In the sixth inning the Rookies added two runs to their score on base hits from Folster and Sonoda with a SF from Stan Dela Cruz. K-Makule was not to be outdone and scored two more runs of their own on hits from Guy Ruiz, Taboniar and Smith. After six innings the score was Rookies 12, K-Makule 17. The Rookies could not score in the top of the seventh inning and the Rookies were given their first lost of the season.
Hitters for the Rookies were: Nishikawa and Hashimoto with 2 for 2, Lizama and Vidinha with 2 for 3, Dela Cruz and Fontanilla with 2 for 4, and Folster with 3 for 4 with three RBI’s. Losing pitcher was Archie Fontanilla.
Hitters for K-Makule were: Buduan and Albarado with 2 for 3, Taboniar and Doric Remata with 2 for 4, Fraticelli with 3 for 3, Lefty Remata and Smith with 3 for 4 and Guy Ruiz with 4 for 4 plus three RBI’s. Winning pitcher was Dado Paiste.
West Kaua‘i 22, Kuku’s Aces 8
West Kaua‘i scored in every inning in this TKO five inning game. Five runs crossed the plate in the first inning on hits form Bob Merkle, Frank Bukoski, Junior Rivera, and Bernard Mahuiki.
In the second inning with two outs, Charlie Carveiro got a base hit and scored on a HR from Merkle. Four runs scored in the third inning on four Kuku’s errors and base hits from Boni Garma, Ben Aranio and Carveiro. In the fourth inning, four more runners crossed the plate off two Kuku’s errors and hits from Larry Ephan, Rivera, Mahuiki and John Patt.
In the fifth and final inning, the regulation seven runs were added to the scoreboard on hits from Carveiro, Bukoski and Ephan. Hitters for West Kaua‘i were: Ephan, Rivera, and Mahuiki with 2 for 3, Merkle and Bukoski with 2 for 2. Winning pitcher was Aranio.
The Aces came up with two runs in the second inning off hits from Soloman Reyes, Stan Rita, Ernest Dela Cruz, Kaleo Furtado and Tada Hashimoto. In the third inning with one out and no runners on, Gordon Doo got a single HR. Al Lomosad, Junior Ruiz, Ben Pescador, Reyes, Rita and Stan Dela Cruz all get singles and scores three more runs.
The final two runs came in the fifth inning on hits from Doo, Lomosad, and Reyes. Hitters for Kuku’s aces were: Junior Ruiz and Ernest Dela Cruz with 2 for 2, Doo, Lomosad and Rita with 2 for 3, and Reyes with 3 for 3. Losing pitcher was Tada Hashimoto.
