I am writing to express my bewilderment about a plausible disaster brought about by uninformed decisions regarding the Olohena Bridge. The bridge needs replacement and the proposed detour exposes the county, drivers, and citizens of Kaua‘i to unnecessary risk, harm and legal exposure. Waipouli Road, the proposed detour, is a one lane road with several blind 10 mph curves. To pass in opposite directions each car must exit the road and plunge into the ditch. To travel safely, every driver should stop and honk preceding each curve. However, it is rare that drivers warn on another of their approach, and teens often use the road as a drag speedway.
Employing Waipouli road as the detour for the Olohena Bridge would route an additional 2000 cars each day down this dangerous path. In addition to forcing drivers 15 minutes out of their way, this route would undoubtedly cause many life threatening accidents. Just one fatal accident will expose the driver and the county to liability and cost more than the money saved by using an alternative.
There is absolutely no doubt there will be multiple fatal accidents.
This is not simply a problem for the residents of the area but should be a huge concern and priority to the county, anyone who drives, and all the people in Kauai who may unfortunately lose a loved one.
