It promises to be a fun filled evening under the stars and the weather on the West side is almost always clear. This is the ultimate tail-gate party where the norm is to bring the cooler and bar-b-que and of course the tent for big family gatherings.
On hot afternoons I’ve often seen enterprising dad’s filling wading pools for the keikis. The track is located about one mile past Kekaha- turn makai (left) at the pine trees and follow the signs. Adults are $10 and kids 12 and under are free.
Gates open at 12 noon with test and tune racing from 2-6pm. The bracket racing action begins at 7 p.m. with everything from your every day street driven cars to fire breathing alcohol dragsters.
The Speedy Lube-Street Class eliminations are first up on the agenda followed by the Super Street cars sponsored by King Auto Center. We’ll also have race bikes sponsored by JB’s Repair and Jr. dragsters presented by PS&D NAPA. The screamin’ PRO ET racers sponsored by Destination Auto Works & Rapid Repair Handy-man service round out the evening. All race categories repeat throughout the evening with several rounds of eliminations. Trophies and cash prizes (and of course bragging rights) are awarded to event winners and runner- up contestants. There’s been rumors of some big time grudge match races in the works-no names yet just rumors. The Garden Isle Racing Association (GIRA) puts on the event that is a non-profit group that operates solely with the support of many volunteers and major sponsors.
Chris Lowe of Kilauea who is the 2005 association president tells me that only about 1/2 entry gate and racer fees pay for the costs. Generous participation of local island business sponsors makes it all possible. Looking for something different and fun for the whole family-check it out. See you at the races!
