LIHU‘E – David Bukoski’s RBI single to rightfield provided the pivotal whack to drive the Kalaheo Kaneshiro Farms to a 10-9 win over the Makaweli Indians as the Kaua‘i AJA Baseball League hosted only their second series in four weeks, Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
Bukoski, who finished 2-for-4 in the batter’s box, banged his winning hit in the bottom of the eighth to push Kalaheo out of a 9-9 stalemate.
Throughout the day, both teams battled for the lead, Makaweli drawing ahead with three runs in the opening frame, but Kalaheo answering with two homeruns in the bottom of the frame.
Isaac Castillo, Sean Jardin, and Gordon Muramaru opened the scorebooks for Makaweli only to have Kalaheo answer as Brandon Ishibashi cranked a 2-run homer to deep right center, pulling the Kaneshiro Farmers to within one, 3-2. Kaina McCalum followed with a solo shot that sailed over the right-center fence for the stalemate.
Kalaheo continued to add to the tally with three more runs in the second frame only to have Makaweli answer with four runs in the third as Kyle Nakagawa did the batting honors with a two-RBI double for the 7-6 bulge.
Castillo kept Makaweli’s hopes alive in the final frame, but a smart double play by Kalaheo stymied the scoring effort to preserve their win.
No scores were available for the second contest that featured the Hanapepe Rivermen tangling with the Lihu‘e Builders in the nightcap.
Sunday’s games will start at 10 a.m. at Vidinha Stadium, weather permitting.
To date, the AJA season has been rained out of two games including their opening day matchups due to rainy and unplayable conditions at the stadium.
