The 2005 University of Hawai‘i Warrior football season is scheduled to begin Saturday, Sept. 3, against two-time defending national champion USC at Aloha Stadium, Athletics Director Herman Frazier announced yesterday.
“We are pleased and privileged to have such a competitive football schedule,” Frazier said.
“Hopefully, our fans will take that into consideration when they are making decisions about renewing and purchasing season tickets for the upcoming season.”
The schedule features seven home games and five road games, and includes contests against new Western Athletic Conference (WAC) members New Mexico State, Utah State, and Idaho.
Four of the five road games are during the first half of the season, three against WAC opponents and one against Big Ten member Michigan State.
“It’s a tough schedule, but certainly a great one for our fans,” Warrior head coach June Jones said. “We’ll go at it no different than we do every year as far as trying to win as many as we can, playing well at home and conquering those road games. It’s going to be fun to get the exposure of playing against USC and Michigan State, especially for our kids.”
The home schedule is loaded with prime opponents, including: USC, WAC, rivals Boise State and Fresno State, New Mexico State, Utah State, Big Ten power Wisconsin, and former WAC member San Diego State.
The Warriors will host Wisconsin on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25, in the only Friday game on the schedule. The nationally televised game is scheduled to kickoff at 4:05 p.m.
Last season, Hawai‘i finished 8-5 overall and earned a trip to the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl.
The season featured one of the best finishes in UH football history, as the team won three straight, including back-to-back victories against Big Ten opponents Northwestern (40-41) and Michigan State (41-38). The Warriors capped the season with a 59-40 win over UAB in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl on Christmas Eve. It was the program’s six bowl game game and fourth under Jones.
