Kaua‘i’s Dias, Goodwin advance at Pipeline
By The Garden Island
HONOLULU — Kalaheo’s Braden Dias and Hanalei’s Aamion Goodwin advanced to the next round of the $75,000 Monster Energy Pro, presented by Billabong at the Banzai Pipeline yesterday, in surf that climbed from wave face heights of six feet in the morning to 15 feet by early afternoon. It was a tough swell to master. From shore, the swell lines were stacked up to the horizon like a venetian blind.
The swell direction was varied and the swell period was relatively short, meaning that the waves crashed through with little space between during the sets. Competitors who found themselves caught inside the impact zone by crushing white-water had barely enough time to bail off their surfboards, dive under the wave, and surface to catch a breath before the next wave closed out on them.
With up to eight waves in a set, just making it out the back was the biggest challenge of the afternoon heats.
Kapa‘a eliminated from states
After a scoreless first half, King Kekaulike managed to push one score through the goal for the 1-0 over the KIF champion Kapa‘a Warriors girls soccer squad yesterday.
Kapa‘a is now elminated from the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies State Girls Soccer Championships. Kelli Ganiko scored the lone goal of the contest.
King Kekaulike moves on to the consolation final on Saturday against Kealakehe.
The Warriors finished the season at 5-3-2.
Pro Bowl player accused of misdemeanor assault
HONOLULU — Honolulu police are investigating an assault complaint filed against Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison, who was in Honolulu for the NFL’s Pro Bowl game. Two complaints of misdemeanor assault and one of misdemeanor harassment were filed, police said.
Also named in the complaints are two men described as Harrison’s bodyguards.
No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

Konawaena on probation after attack
KAILUA-KONA, Hawai‘i — A high school basketball team has been put on probation for one year following last week’s attack on a referee by a player.
Big Island Interscholastic Federation officials sanctioned Konawaena High School’s basketball program on Wednesday, a week after senior guard Kainoa Austin Abril tried to tackle a referee who had ejected him from a game. Television news broadcasts across the state repeatedly showed the Feb. 9 incident. During the probationary period, “any physical contact with officials and students” may result in the “ejection from the BIIF of the entire Konawaena basketball program,” BIIF President Gordon Bryson said.
Abril, 18, has since been dismissed from the team and is banned from playing sports for the rest of the year. It was the second time this season Abril had been ejected from a game.
“Sorry to everybody that I hurt, but I didn’t mean it,” Abril said. “I just was frustrated because I wanted to play basketball.”
