The controversy over Honey’s death
A controversy is stirring over the death of a dog named Honey who was recently put to sleep by the Kauai Humane Society. Our article published earweek is drawing more letters and calls than any piece we’ve published in a while.
Some communication is backing the Kauai Humane Society and their efforts in protecting animals across Kaua‘i, and how they run their shelter in Puhi.
Other calls and letters are striking out against the society and their procedures for dealing with unwanted dogs and other animals.
Interestingly, we’ve also received what could be called a neutral letter, one that complained we need to have more coverage on human beings than animal controversies.
Looking back, animals have been stars in the pages of The Garden Island. Our articles and photos about a dog stranded on a freighter who ended up spending its quarantine time at the shelter in Puhi went around the globe. Photos of a baby horse at Puhi was almost as popular.
We understand how Honey’s death is stirring up some members of the public against the Kauai Humane Society. We also know that the society is a top-notch non-profit on Kaua‘i, and one that should be given a chance to explain what happened with Honey. Director Dr. Becky Rhodes’ letter published on this page earlier this week gave their side of the story.
Perhaps in these days of terrorism threats and global uncertainty, but economic boom, for Hawai‘i anyway, focusing on a local animal issue is a safe way to react to everything else going on.
We will continue to cover this story, which has become a main topic of conversation for us.
