It High was one of the greatest high school state runs of all time and probably the greatest in Hawai‘i School state soccer.
KIF champion Waimea fought off two OIA powerhouses, Kaiser and Mililani, but they ran out of gas against Kamehameha-O‘ahu, who upended the Menehune, 3-1 last night on Maui in state soccer semifinal action.
Waimea suffered its first loss of the season, but it was a season to remember for the Menehune, despite the loss.
The KIF title holders, who haven’t won since 1999, came out of the gates this season with a vengeance. Waimea’s signature win came against the 4-time defending state champion Mililani squad, who were shocked and outplayed by the Menehune.
Head coach Mark Kennett, his coaching staff, and the boys in blue shouldn’t have anything to hang their heads about after the loss to Kamehameha.
The Warriors jumped out early in the first half, as Kekoa Osorio’s penalty kick gave Kamehameha the early 1-0 lead at the 9th minute.
Waimea was unable to answer, as the Warriors tacked on another goal at the 44th minute, by Jesse LeStronge off of a corner kick which was deflected off of a defender and the goal-keeper.
Kamehameha poured in another score at the 67th minute with Logan Sauer getting credit for the goal.
Waimea’s Chad “Mighty Mouse” Thompson wasn’t going to go away without a say and he proved his worth towards the end of the game with a penalty kick goal, after being tackled inside the penalty box.
Thompson has scored three goals so far in the state tournament, with one more game to go.
The Menehune now play for the third-place trophy tonight at 6 p.m.
