NAWILIWILI – It didn’t take long to fill up the Terrace Restaurant Thursday evening as within thirty minutes of opening the doors to the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i’s “Eat Dessert First,” the dessert offering section of the restaurant was already filled with patrons.
The 10th Annual offering of sweets and desserts is a primary means of raising funds for the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i scholarships, and many of the patrons found that they could help further the education of Kaua‘i’s young adults while indulging in some fancy dessert offerings at the same time.
A silent auction supplemented the fund-raising efforts with the announcement that people may get a chance to drive away from the upcoming “Concert in the Sky” on a new motorcycle.
That prize is being made in conjunction with the Garden Island Racing Association which will open its season in March with a night race.
Chances for the motorcycle were on hand for the Thursday evening event, and people wanting to have an opportunity at the motorcycle may contact any of the Zonta Club members.
The drawing for the motor-cycle will be made on July 4 at the Kaua‘i Hospice’s annual “Concert in the Sky” at Vidinha Stadium.
Additionally, one of the premium prizes at the auction included a romantic getaway package to keep in line with the Valentine’s Day theme.
Linda Shumard from the Carving Stone in Hanapepe was the grand prize winner of this prize .The winning prize package is valued at $1,500 and includes two nights at the Princeville Hotel, lunch for two at the Bali Hai Restaurant at Hanalei Bay Resort, massage for two from Aloha Island Massage, a 14 kt. gold pendant from Robert’s Jewelry, two boxes of Tropical Chocolates from Kauai Chocolates.
Also, a box of champagne flutes and champagne, a set of Lenox candlestick holders with candles and a scented candle from Island Soap & Candle-works.
Patrons entering the dessert area at the event were greeted with columns of Valentine balloons and had a wide variety of items to browse through.
Chick Cacabellos, making his first appearance at the dessert event, was mesmerized with the chocolate fountain where he stuck an oversized strawberry to get it coated.
“Where’s the tilapia?” he joked.
Meanwhile, the Kapa‘a High School Interact Club had about ten of its members, each one garbed in semi-formal attire, serve as volunteers for the event, helping shuttle plates and trays of goodies from the back room to the quickly-disappearing offerings on the tables.
But, between those times, they had an opportunity to mingle with the guests, many of whom donned evening wear suitable for the event.
Sharron Weber, Kathleen Wichman, and Laurie Weber made sure their blinkie hearts were blinking before entering the doors to the event. “These are cute,” Sharron said. “We just got them from the hospital gift shop.”
Shelly Cobb of FM 98.5 served as the hostess of the evening, effectively moving people from selection to selection while calling out the winners of the evening’s specials.
