It was close but the KIF champion Waimea Menehune squad edged the OIA’s Kaiser Cougars, 2-1 yesterday in first round play of the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Boys Soccer State Championships at Kana‘iapuni Stadium on the campus of Kamehameha Schools-Maui.
Kaiser scored the first goal at the 34th minute on a nice shot from Jonathan Su.
The Menehune trudged back in the second half, thanks to Josh Cabral’s goal off of a corner kick at the 56th minute, which tied the game up at one a piece.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the contest went into a tie-breaker shootout. Waimea’s Kenny Estes nailed the first kick into the lower left part of the goal.
Kaiser’s Kaipo Dean came up short, as Kenny’s brother, Justin stopped the attempt.
Waimea’s Jeff Kakuda was also stopped in his shootout attempt, as Kaiser goalie Keola Kamakana denied the score.
Joseph Mecham followed Kenny Estes’ lead and kicked a goal right into the same spot for the score. Kaiser’s Matt Bush answered, but Kollin Morikawa went high right for the next goal and Kaveh Nikou’s attempt was stopped by Justin Estes.
Waimea’s Chad Thompson finished the game off with a successful attempt, which gave the Menehune the win.
Justin Estes played magnificently with six saves and three saves during the extra session.
