Despite being small in stature, Lihu‘e’s Peter Rayno has accomplished a lot of big things throughout his illustrious life.
Rayno has been around sports since the first time he could pick up a ball and hit it with a bat or bounce it, or even throw it.
The multisport athlete played baseball and basketball, but football was his nemesis.
“I had a coach in high school that said I was just too small, so I wasn’t able to play, even if wanted to,” Rayno said.
At that point, he made the best out of the situation by flourishing in the other two sports.
“I always try to stick up for the small guys because I was once in their shoes and I know how they feel,” Rayno said.
Now at age 65 and in his fifth season as a senior softball player for the Lihu‘e A’s, Rayno enjoys the friendships and fellowship at the games.
In addition to holding down the second base slot for the A’s, Rayno is also a basketball official for high school, youth, and the men’s basketball league.
Rayno can also be seen riding his bike around town or even jogging throughout the island.
The Kaua‘i Senior Softball League is definitely a great way to stay in shape for Rayno, but he also enjoys the trips offisland for the state tournament and even the trips to Las Vegas for invitational softball contests.
“I’ve gone to Las Vegas every year since my second year of playing; the competition over there is second to none, but we do pretty well,” Rayno said.
The comical character has a lighthearted sense of humor and has a knack for making people smile with his jokes. But it’s no laughing matter when he’s on the field or on the court, because it’s all business for Rayno, who gives nothing less than 100 1243132n whatever he tries to do.
