Koloa Heritage Trail brochure published
- With the addition of a 14th Koloa Heritage Trail Monument, the Kiha Houna Heiau in front of Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, a new Koloa Heritage Trail brochure and map has been created, adding that site to the detailed interpretive information. Funds for the project came from leaders at Big Save, Inc., Embassy Vacation Resort Poipu Point, First Hawaiian Bank, County of Kaua‘i, Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa, Koloa Community Association, Old Koloa Town Merchants, Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, Outfitters Kauai, Poipu Beach Foundation, Poipu Ocean View Resorts, Poipu Kapili Homeowners Association, Sheraton Kauai Resort, and Tsunami Marketing, along with the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Some 60,000 new brochures have been printed and delivered to both the Poipu Beach Resort Association office and to Hawaii Folder Service. Distribution of this brochure is paid for by both the Old Koloa Town Merchants Association and PBRA. The new monument has also been added to the Koloa Heritage Trail Web site at http://koloaheritagetrail.info.
Kaua‘i jobless rate lowest since 1990
- Kaua‘i’s December, 2004 unemployment rate of 3.3 percent is the lowest recorded for any month since December of 1990, according to statistics from the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. In December, 2004, just 1,050 Kauaians were unemployed, with 30,500 people working out of a civilian labor force of 31,500. The total 2004 Kaua‘i unemployment rate of 4.0 percent is also the lowest annual total since before 1990.
Cruise ships calling on Nawiliwili
- The Norwegian Wind, a 754foot cruise ship, calls on Nawiliwili Harbor Wednesday, Feb. 9, scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. and depart at 5 p.m. The Pride of Aloha, 850 feet long, calls each Monday, arriving at 7 a.m. and remaining overnight, leaving Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Island Princess, 965 feet long, calls Friday, Feb. 11, scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m. The Statendam, 720 feet long, calls Saturday, Feb. 12, arriving at 7 a.m. and leaving at 5 p.m. the same day.
Construction Career Expo is coming
- The Construction Career Expo is set for Sunday, Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon on the campus of Kaua‘i Community College in Puhi. There is no admission fee. Construction career information will include material on apprenticeship programs, training opportunities, and demonstrations of various trades. Several governmental and privateindustry entities sponsor the event.

Aloha Airlines, union reach agreement
- Officials at Aloha Airlines and its largest union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) of the AFLCIO, announced a 52month contract agreement effective through the end of April, 2009. Leaders on both sides agreed not to discuss terms of the contract that covers ticket agents, reservations agents, commissary, clerical, ramp, cargo and contractservice workers. The 2,250 workers are over half of Aloha’s 3,700 employees.
BOH executive named to federal board
- Bank of Hawaii Senior Vice President Kelly K. Walsh has accepted a threeyear appointment to the Federal Reserve Board’s 30member Consumer Advisory Council. Council members advise Federal Reserve Board members on the exercise of their responsibilities under the Consumer Credit Protection Act, and on matters in the area of consumer financial services. The council meets three times a year in Washington, D.C.
Drugs in workplace is seminar topic
- Gary Shimabukuro of Laulima Hawaii leads a Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce workshop, Drugs in the Workplace, The Role of the Supervisor, on Thursday, Feb. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort near Hanama‘ulu. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 22. Training includes drug awareness, the supervisor’s role and responsibility, identification, intervention skills, documentation, and more. The cost, which includes all materials, continental breakfast and light refreshments, is $35 per person for Chamber members, $30 each for three or more Chamber members, and $40 per person for guests. Chamber Business After Hours event set
- Officials at the American Cancer Society Kaua‘i office host a Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church parish hall at the corner of Hardy and ‘Umi streets in Lihu‘e. There will be pupus, refreshments, door prizes, and information on how American Cancer Society officials and volunteers provide services including free workplace wellness programs. New Kaua‘i cell site among Verizon improvements
- A new cell site on Kaua‘i was among the $31 million in statewide improvements made last year by officials at Verizon Wireless, a company spokesperson said.
Hawaiian, union agree on threeyear contract
- Officials at Hawaiian Airlines and the International Association of Machinists announced the union members have ratified a new, threeyear contract. The new contract covers 1,329 employees of the IAM Clerical unit working in accounting, reservations, customer service, and ramp services.
State has new rules for workers’ compensation
- State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations officials announced proposed new and amended administrative rules relating to workers’ compensation law and vocational rehabilitation.
The proposed new rules and amendments reflect several changes in DLIR officials’ internal processing of workers’ compensation cases, and are in part in response to public requests for clarity and transparency in the workers’ compensation system. The new rules are meant to ensure injured workers receive quality care, receive benefits in a timely manner, get vocational rehabilitation services quickly and efficiently, and to improve the hearings process, provide alternative resolution of claims, define approval requirements for employers seeking to be selfinsured, and define “disciplinary action” and other terms. Air seats to Kaua‘i expected to increase
- The number of nonstop airline seats from the West Coast to Lihu‘e Airport is expected to increase by 16.2 percent over the period of February to April, according to officials with the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Some 82,903 total seats, or 43,181 from Los Angeles, 38,982 from San Francisco, and 740 from Oakland, are expected over that period.

- Leaders at the Hawai‘i Small Business Development Center on Kaua‘i present a workshop, “The Basics of eBay Selling,” on Friday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aloha Beach Resort Kauai in Wailua.
