The Kaua‘i Senior Softball League got off with a bang on Saturday Jan-uary 22 with Danny Carvalho (oldest player in the league) throwing out the first pitch. Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste volunteered as the catcher with coun-cilwoman Joann Yukimura hitting the first ball.
Lihu‘e A’s 17, West Kaua‘i 16
Lihu‘e A’s cinched their first game of the season against West Kaua‘i in a tight game with a score of 16 to 17. West Kaua‘i was leading up to the fifth inning 15 to 12. In the sixth inning West Kaua‘i scored an ad-ditional run but the Lihu‘e A’s came up with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, putting Lihu‘e up by one run.
The game was called in the sixth on time limit. Hitters for West Kaua‘i were: Larry Ephan and Bernard Mahuiki with 3 for 3 and two HR’s for Mahuiki, and Maxie Moreno and John Patt with 2 for 3. Losing pitcher was Ben Aranio.
Hitters for Lihu‘e A’s were: Dwight Fujii with 3 for 3 and one home run, Tomoo Hiranaka, Roy Running, Shi-gio Oshiro and Ernest Domingo with 2 for 3 with one HR for Domingo, and Bruddah Reitmeister with 3 for 4. Winning pitcher was Hiranaka.
Lihu‘e took a fall in their second game with a loss to the Rookies 13 to 15. Lihu‘e was leading up through the sixth inning 13 to 9, however, in the top of the seventh the Rookies came up with six big runs pushing them ahead 15 to 13. Lihu‘e could not score in the seventh.
Hitters for the Rookies were: Charles Carveiro with 2 for 2, Ray-mond Espino and Mike Folster with 2 for 3, Walter Souza with 3 for 3, Archie Fontanilla with 3 for 4, and Wayne Hashimoto with 4 for 4. Win ning pitcher was Archie Fonta-nilla.
Hitters for Lihu‘e A’s were: Shigio Oshiro and Ernest Do-mingo with 2 for 3, Dwight Fujii, Pete Rayno, Tomoo Hiranaka and Roy Running with 2 for 4, Isamu Yoshishige with 3 for 3, Bruddah Reitmeister and Rus-sell Bardago with 3 for 4. Losing pitcher was Hiranaka.
East Kaua‘i 16, Kuku’s Aces 7
Kuku’s Aces put up a valiant effort against the aggressive East Kaua‘i team, losing with a score of 7 to 16.
The Aces came up with four runs in the first inning off hits from Gordon Doo, Junior Ruiz, Solomon Reyes, Ali Lomosad, Stan Rita and Ernest Dela Cruz. The Aces final three runs came in the fifth inning off hits from Tada Hashimoto, Walter Shaf-fer and Reyes.
East Kaua‘i scored six runs in the first with a barrage of hits from Donald Boro, Alex Youn, Dickie Koerte, Richard Ra-mones, Jerome Hew, Ernest Ko-erte, Les Kubo, and Al Salvador. By the end of the game East Kaua‘i had tacked on ten more runs ending the game 7 to 16.
Hitters for East Kaua‘i were: Les Kubo with 2 for 2, Dickie Koerte with 2 or 3, Hew and Boro with 2 for 4, Damien Vic-torino, Alex Youn and Ramones with 3 for 4.
Winning pitcher was Norman Holt, relief pitcher was Ronnie Holt. Big hitter for the Aces was Solomon Reyes with 3 for 3. Losing pitcher was Stanley Rita.
Kawaihau 1, K-Makule 14
In the final game of the day Kawaihau TKO’d in the sixth inning giving K-Makule the win. Brothers Lefty and Doric Remata both came up with 3 for 4 hits, and short stop Guy Ruiz came up with a perfect 4 for 4. Winning pitcher for K-Makule was Dado Paiste.
Kawaihau managed five hits in the game, all singles off Calvin Fujita, Pat Cossier, Paul Gusman, Jack Lucas, and Blaine Davis. Losing pitcher for Kawaihau was Paul Gusman.
