What’s your favorite Superbowl moment?
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
It’s almost that time again and like most of you, I certainly can’t wait until Superbowl Sunday on February 6. But before that happens, there will be some great conference championship games between New England and Pittsburgh, and Atlanta and Philadelphia.
Superbowl can be a time for the whole family to get together and just enjoy the food, the commercials, and of course, the game.
This year, I’d like to hear from you and your most memorable Superbowl Sunday moment. You can either email me at kauaisports@pulitzer.net, fax it in at 245-5286, or just leave me a message on the phone at 245-3681, ext. 257. I will try and publish as many as I can, up until the big game.
Superbowl Sunday is almost like another holiday. Everyone plans for the big game and the roads are empty, so even local law enforcement officials let potential speed demons go.
Just to get you going, I’m going to share one of my favorite Superbowl moments.
My favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, (Yes, I know they were the worst this past season, but they still have the most Superbowls and they’ll be back) and the Cincinnati Bengals tangled in Superbowl XXIII, back in 1989. This one was memorable because the 49ers were in it and more importantly, it was because of the way they won the game. However, at the rightful age of nine, I was starting to enjoy the Superbowl more for the family-like atmosphere, than the actual game.
It was as if the game was an excuse for my family to get together and just relax and have some good food and drink too.
Most of the Superbowls, including, the 16th one, were at my uncle Ricky and aunty Kathy Carveiro’s place in Lawa‘i.
If you know Ricky, then you probably know that he’s one of the biggest Dallas Cowboys fans that I know of. He’s got the hats, cupholders, banners, keychains, you name it, if it’s got anything to do with the Cowboys, Ricky’s got it. At that time, the Cowboys and 49ers were big rivals, so we were rivals as well, in fact, my dad is also a big Dallas supporter, so both he and Ricky would gang up on me, everytime the Cowboys beat the ‘Niners. Superbowl XXIII is arguably one of the greatest Superbowls ever. Everytime I think about the game, I picture Joe Montana’s pass soaring through the air and John Taylor laying his hands out to make the game-winning catch. But I think what really stood out in my mind was how cool, calm, and collected Montana was, during that drive. He was so calm that he even noticed John Candy in the stands at the game in Miami. Montana mentioned that very fact while in the huddle to his teammates during the drive. While the drive was taking place, my family changed sides, even if they weren’t a 49ers fan. My dad and uncle knew that this was turning out to be one of the greatest games in Superbowl history, so they disregarded the fact that they hated the team in gold and red. Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were the stars of the game, but at Ricky’s house, the real stars were my family and just being with them throughout a great sports moment.
