Kaua‘i Police Department detectives arrested a 36-year-old Kalaheo man Sunday in relation to last week’s homicide of Weslyn Jerves, an 18-year-old mother found dead on a beach near Port Allen.
While he would not release the name of the man charged with second-degree murder, KPD Lt. Roy Asher said the victim and the suspect “were acquaintances.”
The man was in the KPD cell block in Lihu‘e awaiting arraignment this morning on the charge, Asher added.
“I pretty much know who it is,” said Weslyn’s father, Wesley Jerves, on Monday. “The guy’s one scoundrel, good for nothing.”
Weslyn Jerves, the mother of Ceriann Jerves, nearly 20 months old, was found dead near an area known as Glass Beach in Port Allen last Thursday.
Non-police sources say she was stabbed.
Asher said that more details of the crime would be released today, after the suspect is formally charged.
He reiterated that Jerves’ death appears in no way linked to the three attacks that left two women dead and another injured on the Westside in 2000.
“This quick arrest was the result of having experienced investigators, and of the team effort of personnel from all three KPD bureaus (Administrative & Technical, Investigative Services and Patrol Services),” Asher added.
Wesley Jerves said the funeral for his daughter is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 22 at Lihue Lutheran Church on Ho‘omana Road (German Hill), with interment following at Lihu‘e County Cemetery.
A reception will follow at Hanama‘ulu Beach Park.
