In the interest of public safety, leaders of the County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works have temporarily closed the Hanapepe swinging bridge after it was discovered that the bridge was damaged during last weekend’s storm. A portion of the bridge has completely split apart from the end support at the Hanapepe town-side of the bridge, said Al Afos, of the DPW Roads Division. County officials are assessing damages, and will likely bring in a structural engineering consultant for assistance.
No time frame has yet been established for the repair and reopening of the bridge. A timeline will be released once determined.
Ladye Martin, deputy county engineer, indicated the repair would be done in the most expedient manner possible.
