Long-time Westside resident and Gay & and Robinson Tours LLC ATV (all-terrain vehicle) tour operator Mayra Rodrijuez died last week, in what police are calling an apparent industrial accident.
Rodrijuez, 49, was apparently clearing a tree from the trail used for the tour in Kaluakoi Valley, in the mountain area of Kaumakani, when her ATV rolled on top of her.
Scanner dispatches reported an unresponsive woman was at the Warren Robinson residence near Kaumakani.
She will be sorely missed by friends on the Westside, as well as her family in Caracas, Venezuela, said a friend of hers. “She was a Westside soul,” said long-time friend Brian Howell. “She was a beautiful person. Everybody liked her.”
Rodrijuez had been working at the ATV tour operation since company officials began the tours in 2003.
Gay & Robinson officials would not comment on Rodrijuez, as they are still sorting things out with family members overseas, said E. Alan Kennett, Gay & Robinson president.
Howell described Rodrijuez as a vibrant personality who truly loved the outdoors, especially Koke‘e. “Mayra had a zest for life, a passion for every endeavor, whether it be hiking in Koke‘e, picking maile, taking pictures, surfing, or rambling on an ATV,” he said. “She lived with a smile in her heart and the wind in her hair. “She appreciated the beauty of nature and simple things — a flower, rainbow, waterfall, sunset, antique bottle or any old classic,” he continued.
“Mayra loved music — hopeless-romantic stuff from the ‘70s and early ‘80s that you can sing in the shower.
“Just her smile was amazing,” Howell said.
