Ku Kilakila, Kaua‘i’s New Year Ambassadors of Aloha, were expected to do us proud this morning when they represent their home island and state in the annual Rose Bowl parade.
Thousands of people were expected to camp out on Colorado Boulevard despite the cold and soggy conditions. The National Weather Service was forecasting showers and temperatures dropping into the low 40s.
An estimated 8 inches of rain fell on the golf course adjacent to the Rose Bowl stadium this week. The inclement weather disrupted several of the Rose parade activities.
The Rose Parade festival was canceled for two days and pre-parade marching band performances were moved indoors to Pasadena City College.
Despite the radical change in performance space at the College hall, Kaua‘i’s stars played, danced and marched in place to a sellout, standing-room-only crowd and reportedly brought down the house with their performance.
According to information posted on the Kauai All-Island Marching Band website, one Rose Parade official said, “In five years of BandFests, this is the best all-around performance I have ever seen at this event.”
Word is that it has not rained on the Rose Parade since 1954 but officials said, no matter what, the parade will step out onto Colorado Boulevard rain or shine.
