KALAHEO — Coming off their 19-11 win over the Lihu‘e On Fire last Thursday, the Wailua A continued their winning ways by knocking off Wailua B, 56-26 as the county’s 14 Under Girls Basketball league entered its final week of play Monday night in Kalaheo.
Guard Kira Nakamura topped the Wailua A scoring with 15 points, combining with Leilani Laranio’s 11 points, and Chelsie Villatora’s 10 points in the Monday night win that came after a faltering start where Wailua B outgunned the A team, 6-3.
Nakamura and Lehua McCabe sparked the A comeback in the second frame with four points apiece, and the entrance of Laranio in the third frame saw her notch seven of the A’s 16-point period for a 31-16 halftime lead.
Gabrielle Matayoshi finished with eight points, McCabe tallyed six markers, and a quartet from Britney Salvador rounded out the A’s scoring.
Kira Kupihea ended the contest with a game-high 18 points to lead Wailua B with Lynsi Nakamura and Allyssa Carvalho each adding four in the effort.
Coach Bobby Kamakele used his game against the Lihu‘e Comets to hone the skills of his secondaries as guard Cahelyn Briones was given ample court time in the second half as Waimea locked up a 41-17 win over the Comets by capitalizing on turnovers and deft passing.
Kayla Werner topped the Waimea scoring with a dozen points followed by Natalie Mata contributing nine points, but generating numerous turnovers in the first half.
Jaime Jacinto finished with eight, Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade added six, and Briones finished with four points. A pair from Georgette Dela Cruz rounded out the Waimea win.
Kelsey Cadiente paced the Comets’ scoring with six points with Rachel Hamamura adding five. Pairs from Kathleen Cadiente, Lauren James, and Tristen Rosare rounded out the effort.
