WAIMEA — It somehow all came together yesterday for the Kapa‘a High School softball team, who fought back for its first victory of the season against Waimea High School, 13-10 in seven innings.
The Waimea Canyon Ballpark battle went down to the wire, but Kapa‘a’s vastly improved defense showed its stripes towards the end of the game.
Kennilyn Nakamura came up big with the game-saving catch to end the game. She twirled backwards for the diving catch in the outfield from her shortstop position.
Also making a nice catch was Moana DeSilva, who scooped up a Waimea pop fly from her leftfield post. Cassie Mundon ended the Menehune threat in the sixth with a nice grab in foul territory.
With Waimea up 9-7 in the sixth inning, Kapa‘a rallied to score six runs in the seventh for the victory.
In the seventh, Kapa‘a loaded the bases with no outs against Waimea’s Syanne Sagawa. Mundon scored the first run in the seventh due to a walk.
Kapa‘a pitcher Stephanie Kawamura helped herself out with a 2-RBI single, scoring Ella Arume and Chasare Laboguen for the 10-9 lead.
Shantel Wong brought her big bat up to the plate and creamed an RBI single to score DeSilva.
Nakamura joined the hitting parade with an RBI single, allowing Makaleka Ferreira to score. A Waimea error in the outfield led Nakamura to third and pushed Kawamura home for the 13-9 advantage.
Kapa‘a’s Wong used her arm behind the plate to gun down Kelsie Igne for the first out of the last inning.
Cheri Kua notched the final run of the contest, after drawing a walk from Kawamura.
