LIHU‘E — Control was the name of the game last night at Isenberg Park and Waimea just wasn’t able to find it, en route to a 8-4 loss to the Red Raiders.
Kaua‘i already locked up the first round title, but Waimea showed some spark and if they limit their walks, they will be a force to be reckoned with in the second round.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the first inning thanks to Waimea starting pitcher Nue Wong, who walked home four of the five runs.
A.J. Silva ripped an RBI single, which gave the Red Raiders, the 5-2 lead.
Waimea stormed back in the fifth inning, as Melissa Moreno crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Moani Durant came home on an error. Durant’s spectacular plays with her glove were Sportscenter-like and kept the Kaua‘i contingent at bay.
But Kaua‘i pulled away, as Kanoe Carveiro couldn’t control her pitches. Ulu Kelekoma, Ashley Nonaka, and pitcher Sherri Gebauer all scored on walks.
The Menehune couldn’t come up with any runs in their last inning, which made the final score, 8-4 in favor of the Red Raiders.
Gebauer picked up the win for Kaua‘i. She pitched a complete game for the Red Raiders and has shown that she can dominate even if she doesn’t pitch well.
KIF softball continues on Monday, December 27, with Kapa‘a taking on Waimea at Waimea Canyon Park in doubleheader action, which will be the final games of the first round. The second round starts up on Jan. 5 with Kaua‘i facing Kapa‘a.
