WAIMEA – The national champion Junior PeeWee (JPW) Kekaha Panther cheerleaders are home from their 2004 National Cheer and Dance Competition in Florida where they earned first place in their division.
Joining forces with the Hanapepe Colts JPW squad, who finished that same competition in sixth place, the national champions donned their Disneyworld bags laden with goodies to thank the Westside community by participating in the annual Waimea Lights Parade, Saturday.
Members of the Kilohana Canoe Club had yet to finish celebrating the arrival of their new purple-and-white canoe, and took advantage of the parade to show off the new craft, one of the coaches, Hualani Duncan, commenting, “This year, Waimea High School will be paddling their own canoe.”
Duncan and her sister manned one of the audio stations for the parade, but is already anticipating the start of the KIF Paddling season that starts on Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Wailua River.
Prior to that, two long distance invitationals will take place at Nawiliwili Harbor on Jan. 8 and 15 sponsored by local canoe clubs.
Teddy Arroyo’s gift of ten bicycles to Westside schools was also in evidence at the parade as the lucky recipients joined members of the Waimea High School JV football team to show off their new wheels to an enthusiastic crowd that lined the streets of Waimea.
Also participating in the festivities were members of the Waimea Boys & Girls Club under the direction of coach Bobby Kamakele.
