HONOLULU — Sancho Lyttle had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 19 Houston over Hawai‘i 66-55 in the opening game of the Paradise Classic on Thursday night.
Kiemona Harris added 16 points for the Lady Cougars, who went on a 9-0 run in the second half to open a 47-32 lead with 9:06 remaining. Lyttle scored back-to-back baskets during the run.
Hawai‘i closed to 55-46 on Milia Macfarlane’s 3-pointer with 3:35 remaining, but Harris scored 10 seconds later and Lyttle added two free throws with 2:59 left to seal the game.
Houston’s full-court press forced 11 second-half turnovers and 23 for the game.
Janevia Taylor led Hawai‘i (3-3) with 15 points but couldn’t prevent the Rainbow Wahine from losing their 18th straight game to a ranked opponent.
The Lady Cougars (9-0) started the second half on an 8-0 run after leading 23-19 at halftime.
Hawai‘i led for the game’s first 11 minutes, but a basket by Daphne Andre gave Houston a 12-11 advantage and the lead for good.
