When the first pitch goes off at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, both the Waimea High School Menehune and the Kapa‘a High School Warriors will be seeking to enter their first win in the week-old KIF softball season.
Kapa‘a, who traveled to Isenberg on Wednesday to open the season, was pommeled by the Red Raider bats, and the Menehune, hosting Kaua‘i to a Saturday double-header, was able to generate runs, but dropped the pair to the Red Raiders who now hold a commanding 3-0 standing.
Kapa‘a will be earnest in their attempt to break into the winning column as both coaches Rory Rayno and Herbie Kawamura were on hand Saturday to watch Menehune pitcher Cassie Koerte give up the first game, 10-6 behind a four-run fifth frame as Kaua‘i batter Jenna Mercado, Kaua‘i’s shortstop, whacked into a three-RBI triple.
Waimea is headed by first-year coach Teddy Arroyo, and as parent Mike Koerte noted, “This should be a real competitive year” once the players get their feet planted.
Game time is 5:30 p.m. at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park located across the Kapa‘a Armory for a single seven-inning affair under the lights.
There is no admission fee to the games.
