LIHU‘E – Drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Poinciana Street and Kuhio Highway were transported to Wilcox Hospital for further treatments, Monday night.
According to witnesses at the scene, the driver of a late model blue pickup, a 19-year-old male, was speeding townbound from Wal-Mart, and before anyone could do anything, ran the red light at Poinciana Street where he collided into a white foreign-made compact car driven by a 52-year-old male.
Both vehicles carried sole occupants.
Crews from the Kaua‘i Fire Department hosed down the accident scene as a precaution against fire while other firemen treated the accident victims along with paramedics from the American Medical Response team.
Police officers directed traffic that had town-bound traffic re-routed through the Fujii Street subdivision, and traffic out of Lihu‘e was restricted to just one lane during the preliminary investigative phase.
The mishap was reported shortly after 6:30 p.m.
