With a big swell forecast to hit today, and a huge swell scheduled for Wednesday, the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters is expected to commence today and finish this week.
One of the most prestigious events in surfing, the Pipe Masters is the final event of the year on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour.
Small surf postponed the contest yesterday.
Kauaian Andy Irons is looking to complete the last two legs of a “triple three-peat” — World Champ (which he’s already won for the third time ), Triple Crown Champ (for which he’s currently in third place), and Pipe Masters Champ.
With a fifteen-foot swell and clean conditions expected, Round One of the main event looks to start around 8 a.m.
Irons’ brother, Bruce, also of Hanalei, is looking to remain on the WCT, the top surfing circuit. The former Pipe Masters winner needs a quarterfinal finish.
On Maui, Kaua‘i natives Keala Kennelly and Rochelle Ballard could meet in the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay.
The women’s event, which was also postponed yesterday, looks for the same swell to pump in some great conditions for that contest today.
All the action for both contests will be simulcast on the web at www.triplecrownofsurfing.com, and stay tuned to The Garden Island for photos and results.
