Friends tying the knot!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
Most of you don’t know who he is but he plays an integral part of the puzzle at The Garden Island newspaper.
For those of you that do know him, he is a kind, gentle, warm, and funny guy, who makes you feel welcomed and special.
Bobby Schutz, The Garden Island’s paginator (the individual who puts all of the pages together) tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Errin Martin yesterday in an intimate ceremony at the future site for the Calvary Chapel Kapa‘a Church, located right off of the Kapa‘a Bypass road.
I work with Schutz on a daily basis, putting the sports pages together and I could definitely see that he was ready to tie the knot. He would mention how many days he had till the “Big Day” everyday until a few days before he went on vacation to prepare for his wedding.
Besides paginating, Schutz is also a skilled photographer (we call him the caucasian Dennis Fujimoto), who has shot many photos for the sports page and the front page as well. His most memorable shot must’ve been the truck stuck in the flooded area by Kamalani Playground, which was featured on the front page about a week ago.
That photo truly illustrated the type of weather we’ve been having over the past couple of months.
Schutz’s main job is to make the newspaper look good and his work goes unnoticed because he doesn’t write stories or get some credit in the newspaper for being the paginator, but all of us here really do appreciate his hard work and great attitude.
Bobby and his new wife Errin will surely enjoy their time on the Big Island on their honeymoon. Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Schutz!
It’s good to see friends moving on with their lives and getting hitched. Another good friend, Kaua‘i High School class of 1998’s Genoa Ward is also getting married.
Ward played football and basketball back in the late ‘90s and went away to the mainland to do his mission for a couple of years.
After that, he enrolled at a JC college and now resides in San Diego, still in school pursuing a degree.
Along the way, Ward found his sweetheart and her name is Brianne Atkinson, who’s from the area.
Genoa called me a couple of days ago to tell me all about it. It was definitely a surprise to me at first, just because we’ve had conversations before about waiting a while before getting married.
In addition, the date they set is on December 30th and that’s not next year, that’s this year, which is only about a couple of weeks away.
Actually, Michael and Stephanie Ellis (Hale Kaua‘i) got hitched quickly too. I believe they only dated a few months before tying the knot.
So after this year’s done, there will be three of my good friends (James Ellis, Bobby Schutz, and Genoa Ward) off the market. Now is this a sign or just a part of life?
Personally, I think it’s a little bit of both. For one, I am getting close to the average “marital age.”
Plus all three of these individuals are at the stage in their lives, where the next step was to find that special person to share the rest of their lives with. Luckily for all of them, they were with that special someone at the right time.
I’m happy for all three of them. They have picked great wives and I wish them the best for years to come. To me, life seems more interesting at times when the people around you start to shift gears and move on to different stages of their lives. But it also reminds you of the stage of your life that you’re in also!
