HANAPEPE — When the sun went down in Hanapepe yesterday, someone forgot to turn up the heat, as the chilly atmosphere at Hanapepe Stadium made fans, coaches, and players bring out the blankets and jackets. In the meantime, the Menehune boys brought out the big guns and claimed the first contest with a 2-1 win over Kaua‘i, thanks to Chad Thompson, whose nifty moves gave Waimea two goals. Red Raider Mikiala Cup Choy was credited with the lone goal for Kaua‘i.
Red Raider athletic trainer Keith Burgess was busy all night, as Kaua‘i’s Agu Garcia went down first with an ankle injury, then teammate Frank Speetjens broke his collar bone and will likely be out for the season. Waimea’s Joseph Mecham was the third casualty of the contest with a knee ailment.
Ali Arakaki and Auika Muragin found the net for the two Kaua‘i goals (according to Keila Curtis) en route to a win over the Menehune girls, 2-1. Summer Ibara kicked in Waimea’s only goal. Kapa‘a and Waimea battle at Vidinha on Saturday with the first match starting at 10 a.m.
