LIHU‘E — Muddy and soggy were the two most popular words last night at Isenberg Park, but Kaua‘i High School looked crisp and solid in its romp over Kapa‘a High School, 18-1 in a game cut short to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
The Red Raiders utilized a huge first inning, scoring 11 runs, thanks to RBI’s from Ashley Nonaka, Randi Oketani, Angela Kirchner, A.J. Silva, and Samantha Koga in the KIF’s softball opener.
Kaua‘i pitcher Sheri Gebauer managed to keep the Warrior bats silent with relief help from Darcie Allianic, who pitched the rest of the way.
The Red Raiders continued to slam away on Kapa‘a pitcher Stephanie Kawamura, who had trouble with control throughout the game.
In the second inning, Nonaka and Gebauer notched RBI’s to put Kaua‘i up 13-1.
The third frame was silent, as Kapa‘a was unable to score any runs, but the fireworks continued for the Red Raiders, who finished up the fourth inning with five more runs.
Koga drove home Brittany Brackenridge on a single and Oketani crossed the plate on a Kapa‘a error to make the tally, 16-1 in favor of the Red Raiders.
Jenna Mercado got into the scoring spree with an RBI single, scoring Koga, and Kirchner scored the last Kaua‘i run on a fielder’s choice.
