The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for our needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the county Agency on Elderly Affairs seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Toys, books and clothes would help this family
Jenny is a single mom of two children. She receives no assistance nor child support from the children’s father, who has “disappeared” to another island.
Jenny works full time and part-time jobs to try and make ends meet. Because of this, Clyde often stays at home after school to care for his younger brother while mom is at work. He is missing out on a lot of the activities teens of his age take for granted. The boys would appreciate toys and books and mom could use some new clothes.
Mary would love some food, gift certificates
Mary has had a very difficult life, growing up feeling unloved and unwanted. Her marriage failed despite years of trying to make it work. Yet despite all the sadness that surrounds her, she continued to reach out to help others. One such man became the love of her life. Just as Mary was finally feeling safe and on top of the world, it came crashing down. Her beloved husband died suddenly and unexpectedly. But Mary is a survivor. Through the tears and pain, she picked herself up and began to rebuild her life until yet another challenge set her back …. Mary was diagnosed with cancer. Her recovery has been long and hard preventing her from returning to work. Mary loves creating crafts and sewing and would benefit from having a gift certificate from Wal-Mart. Since finances are very limited any kind of food certificates would also be helpful.
Father, sons and grandpa need new clothing this year
Chris is a single father of four children, ages 15, 13, 12 and 10. His wife left him while he was away undergoing treatment for two years. Chris is doing well now and is trying to make a better life for himself and his children. He’s working full-time but money is still tight. Because he is unable to afford rent, Chris and children live with his grandfather. All the children could use clothing, as could their father and their grandfather as well.
